[Openvpn-users] Windows 8.1 64 Bit - TAP device driver

Hi

I try to install (as Admin) "openvpn-install-2.3.2-I003-x86_64.exe" on
Windows 8.1 Prof. 64 Bit (newest updates), during installation process I
get the error message

TAP-Windows 9.92 Setup
An error occurred installing TAP device driver

When I start OpenVPN (as Admin) I get (verb 6)

TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds
TLS Error: TLS handshake failed
(although when I stop the Windows firewall and sophos antivirus)

Do you have a solution or an advice to solve this problem?

Hi Christof,

If the tap-windows driver is not installed, you won't be able to connect
to any OpenVPN server. Here are some techniques you could use to debug
your tap-windows installation problem:

Hi Samuli

thank you very much! I removed "unknown" drivers and tried to follow the
instructions (manual driver installation and so on). Unfortunately,
everything so far failed, but I will try on.

Is there an automatic way to clean the registry and device manager? ;)

Hi Christof,

I found[*] this quite exhaustive presentation of Windows driver
installation:

So the basic driver installation on Windows Vista and above goes like this:

1) The driver is imported in the driver store
2) The driver is installed to driver folder
3) The driver is loaded

In your case it seem that the import to driver store fails:

!!! sto: Failed to call to import driver package. Error = 0x0000000D

In the presentation there are also debugging steps which might prove useful.
